Women at an increased risk of breast cancer may be able to take Tamoxifen, a pill that has been shown to prevent breast cancer in women at high risk. The National Cancer Institute estimated that 2.4 million women in the U.S. would potentially benefit from taking Tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer. In a report published in 2003, the National Cancer Institute estimated that about 28,000 cases of breast cancers could be prevented in the next five years if those women took Tamoxifen. Since Tamoxifen has some serious risks you should consult with your doctor to see if your potential benefits would outweigh your potential risks.
