Breast Cancer risks

Know your breast cancer risks and ease your fears.

At Precision Surgery you will find the first surgeons in the region to be members of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Your doctors will be aware of the latest scientific advances in breast disease.

Whether you have an abnormal mammogram, have found a breast mass, or have been diagnosed with breast cancer, we will work with you to design a treatment plan tailored for your needs.

Genetic education is also offered should you be at high risk for breast cancer. You can be tested for BRCA, the gene which can affect you, your sisters or your daughters. The BRCA gene can be passed down through male family members as well.

We will always provide compassionate support to help you throughout your evaluation and treatment. In fact most of our consultations for breast issues turn out not to need any surgery!

Mammosite

What if you have breast cancer and you don't want a mastectomy?

Mammosite is a radiation therapy delivery system that works from the inside. So many women with breast cancer will have an option for a lumpectomy and a 5 day treatment of radiation therapy instead of a disfiguring mastectomy.

Low-Fat Diet May Stall Breast Cancer Recurrence

Hormone-Negative Cancers Most Affected

Eating a low-fat diet is known to help the heart, but now there's evidence it may also have a positive effect on certain types of breast cancer. Breast cancer patients who stick to this type of eating plan have a lower risk of their cancer returning, researchers say.
"This study may well represent the first lifestyle change -- namely lowering dietary fat intake -- that can have a favorable effect on breast cancer outcome," said lead researcher Rowan T. Chlebowski, MD, PhD, of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Chlebowski discussed his findings Monday at the annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Oncology, held in Orlando. They have not yet been published in a medical journal.

For their study, he and his colleagues recruited nearly 2,500 postmenopausal women (ages 48-79) who had been treated for early-stage breast cancer with surgery and standard follow-up care (such as radiation, tamoxifen, or chemotherapy). Of this group, they randomly assigned 975 women to eat a low-fat diet -- about 33 grams of fat daily.

Smoking Ups Risk of Premenopausal Breast Cancer

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Both active and "passive" smoking (exposure to secondhand smoke) increase the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal but not postmenopausal women, a study of middle-aged Japanese women suggests.
The investigators think that higher levels of estrogens present in the body of premenopausal women may act jointly with external cancer-causing agents, such as tobacco, to fuel the development of breast cancer.
